What are mosquitoes?

Worldwide there are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes living, breeding, and feeding on the blood of people and animals. Adult mosquitoes have slender bodies, hairy wings, and extended, piercing mouthparts they use for feeding on both blood and plant nectar; additionally, female mosquitoes feed on blood from mammals in order to obtain the protein required to create viable eggs.

In Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the most common species of these fly-like insects buzzing around our heads and outdoor spaces include yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti), Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus), common malaria mosquitoes (Anopheles quadrimaculatus), common house mosquitoes (Culex pipiens), and gallinippers (Psorophora ciliata). To help relieve your property of mosquitoes, Northeast Region Pest Control provides effective mosquito reduction services for property owners in our area.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

In order to produce viable eggs, female mosquitoes must have blood meals for protein. They feed on a variety of animals and people and can spread a variety of human-pathogens, diseases, and parasites. In our area, mosquitoes are most likely to spread eastern equine encephalitis or West Nile virus to humans. In developing and tropical countries, mosquitoes spread malaria and yellow fever, which kills or debilitates millions each year. Mosquitoes are also problematic for our pets because they spread deadly parasitic heartworms. You should always try to avoid coming into contact with biting mosquitoes as much as possible.

Why do I have a mosquito problem?

Mosquitoes are prolific breeders and a serious pest problem throughout the Northeast. If there are suitable places to breed, rest, and forage for food on your property, you will have problems with mosquitoes. Females deposit their eggs on standing water, vegetation in the water, in tree voids, and areas that flood. Properties with lots of flowering vegetation are also attractive to mosquitoes since plant nectar is their primary source of food.

Where will I find mosquitoes?

In our area, mosquito season typically falls between April and October when the hot, humid weather favors breeding. Properties with or near areas of standing water are the most attractive to mosquitoes. These insects live and breed outside. During the heat of the day, mosquitoes rest in tall grass, dense vegetation, under trees, and along fence lines. Mosquitoes don’t live indoors, but they do find their way inside while foraging for food, usually through open windows and doors.
